Paintings for a card game featured in Heart the Lover, a novel by Lily King.
In early spring I was asked by Lily and her husband Tyler to make eighteen images for a card game which features in Lily’s novel by the same name. It was a really fun commission. The only directions were make it “fun and colorful”. I loved painting the characters which make up the different families/suits. The game is based on a board game from 1909 named “Sir Hinkle Funny-Duster”. The game emphasizes politeness in how you ask for cards to build your family. Each family has a King, Queen, Eldest son, ten children, nine servants, a donkey, a parrot, twins and a baby. Once you collect all the cards of one suit, you win. I wanted to make the characters animals instead of people because that seemed more unexpected and fun. Although the game seems sweet, it can get a little cut-throat! It requires not only politeness but a good memory too.

Tablescapes
I am grateful to live in a place with fertile soil near an ocean full of fish. These paintings honor the abundance of food in my life and in our country. I do not take it for granted.

Snakes of Maine
I am afraid of snakes, but I don’t want to be afraid of anything, so I decided the best way to start facing my fear would be to paint them. Based on a recent encounter with a DeKay’s brown snake, I think it’s starting to work.

Portland, Maine series
After the huge life change of moving from Chicago, IL to Portland, Maine in the summer of 2022, I jumped back in to making art with a series of paintings about what I saw and liked around me, sort of a visual diary. All paintings are acrylic and are either on paper or on canvas. Painted in 2022.

Flowers in Vases Series
Acrylics on vintage embroidered fabrics sewn together and stretched over canvas. Each painting in this series also has a potato print either in the background or on the surface the vase is on. Potato prints were one of the first kinds of mark making I did as a kid at our kitchen table when I was growing up. I wanted to have that element of quickness and joy in each of these paintings.
